Farewell to Fitzroy: ‘The Good Lord needed a P.R. officer’

Posted: Wednesday, April 12, 2023. 9:29 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams this afternoon led tributes to the late Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, 47, who died Tuesday afternoon of complications following a stroke.

According to the Commissioner, the men’s careers and friendship were in parallel until he went to study law and on his return they reconnected. Yearwood was diagnosed a full decade ago with diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which first landed him in the hospital, but he pulled through.

This time, the Commissioner said, the prognosis looked bad from the outset, so much so that he could not face a personal visit on top of the loss of his late mother earlier this year at the same facility. In any event, he kept in touch and sought out other medical opinions but due to the severity of his injuries, only prayer might work. But as it turns out, “perhaps the Good Lord needed a P.R. officer beside him in Heaven,” the Commissioner said.

Down here on Earth, ASP Yearwood was the man the Commissioner looked to in order to be the liaison with an often demanding press corps: “He had that charisma and that touch that the media loved about him. I know at times yes you have your differences like with another relationship; you had your differences at time. But he was always one who is always willing to facilitate the media. Sometime I would see late at night when something happened, he would post in the media blog and brief you all. Sometimes I would call and say Fitzroy why would you brief the media so late at night. I said leave that for the morning. He said, boss I just want the media to know what is happening. But that was the type of person he was.” He added that the job carried no perks such as Government-paid phone credit.

For now, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division, will mostly hold over, but the Commissioner already acknowledges that much like with William Dawson as head of the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) after his sudden passing in January, it will be difficult to find a single person to fill ASP Yearwood’s shoes.
