International News: Chief of Mexico’s Immigration Agency to be charged over deadly fire

Posted: Wednesday, April 12, 2023. 10:11 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s Attorney general’s office has launched a criminal investigation into the Chief of the country’s immigration agency following the deadly fire on March 27 that killed 40 migrants.

According to the Voice of America, a statement released on Tuesday noted that National Immigration Institute (INM) chief Francisco Garduno failed to take steps to prevent the fire at the agency’s facility in Ciudad Juarez.

Other officials of the Immigration Institute are also under investigation.

Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the migrants were unable to escape the fire because the guards who had the keys to the cell door were not there at the time of the fire.

A video from inside the facility showed guards hurrying away as smoke filled the building and didn’t show any effort on releasing the migrants.

The migrants were from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, with Guatemalans being the largest contingent.
