International News: United States condemns sentencing of Chinese human rights attorneys

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the United States condemned China’s sentencing of 2 human rights attorneys to over 10 years in prison.

According to Reuters, attorneys Xu Zhiyong, 50, and Ding Jiaxi, 55, were sentenced for supporting internationally recognized freedoms such as the freedoms of assembly and expression.

U.S. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel says that the U.S. urges China to “immediately and unconditionally release these two unjustly detained human rights defenders and to cease any harassment of their family members.”

The attorneys are prominent figures in the New Citizens Movement.

That movement pushed for greater transparency into the wealth of officials.

Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry said it was not aware of the cases.
