By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On April 12, 2023, the Belmopan City Council met with the Department of Environment (DOE), the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH), Belize Solid Waste Management (SWMA) and the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW).
Discussions included a community effort to maintain the city clean.
Several issues addressed were how to deal with illegal dumping on the highway, unauthorized burning at the dumpsite and strategies to garner community support to mitigate littering.
Stakeholders agreed to launch a quarterly cleanup campaign under the name, Belmopan Fajina.
The Fajina, which means “communal labor” is a tradition carried out among the Maya and Garinagu, where members of the community give their time for the good of the community and everyone benefits from working together.
The scheduled date for Belmopan’s 1st Fajina is May 6, 2023, with the objective of generating greater consciousness among residents for civic pride.
