Increments are back – but public officers have to earn them, says Cabinet

Posted: Thursday, April 13, 2023. 4:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Cabinet has been advised that the process to resume the payment of performance-based increments to public officers with effect from April 1 has commenced.

After brief threats of potential industrial action were the increments not restored in the Budget by that time from the Public Service Union (PSU) and Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), the Joint Unions Negotiating Team (JUNT) met with the Government’s negotiating team and persuaded them to move forward with the increments which had been frozen as part of austerity measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The Executive made sure to repeat that there was unanimous agreement that moving forward, increments must be based on actual performance, and every discussion with the Joint Unions must include the implementation of a comprehensive and objective appraisal system.
