By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) is nearing the completion of the upgrading of the main street in San Estevan, Orange Walk District, one of the biggest villages in the country.

San Estevan lies in the middle of the sugar cane belt, so its streets get heavy usage by cane trucks transporting sugar cane. The upgrading is a welcome development for the area.

“One of the things we have in Plan Belize is that we’re trying to pave all the main streets in all the villages in the country and San Estevan being one of the bigger villages, we decided to tackle this very quickly. It’s well done and I’m very proud of the work that has been done,” Prime Minister John Briceño said to the Government of Belize Press Office.

MIDH Chief Executive Officer Victor Espat said the MIDH has been upgrading it to a hot mix standard.

“I know the Minister (Julius Espat) has been speaking about trying to elevate the standards of the roads within the country and so this is one of the pilot projects through the villages where we’re using hot mix,” CEO Espat said.

“It also includes the installation of side drains and sidewalks. The project is about 85% complete and there are only a few more sidewalks and culverts that need to be installed.”

Prime Minister Briceño said he was appreciative of the work done by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development.

“Again, I’m thankful to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing for the excellent work that they have done. It’s a very long street. It’s more than a mile plus in length and I think it’s bringing a significant improvement in the lives of the citizens of San Estevan,” Prime Minister Briceño said.
