Saint Lucia’s United Workers’ Party taps “Shyne” Barrow for National Convention keynote speaker

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has announced that “my friend [the] former Prime Minister and current Leader of the Opposition for St Lucia invited me to be the guest speaker at his Endorsement Convention for Party Leader.”

Allen Chastanet, who was Prime Minister from 2016 to his election defeat in 2021 by Philip Pierre’s St Lucia Labour Party, is unopposed as leader of the United Workers’ Party (UWP), according to In The Know News. The convention is being held from April 14 to 16 with Barrow’s keynote address coming on April 16.

UWP Public Relations Officer Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute, announcing plans, stated that the UWP really hopes that he can connect with the youth while he is in St Lucia. Montoute did not shy away from mentioning Barrow’s troubled past and in fact suggested that he hopes young people will be inspired by Barrow’s story – that even though you may have had some scrapes with the law you can change your life around and become a productive part of society: “Who best, who has more legitimacy to speak to our young people than someone who has been there himself and who has transformed his life and who can connect with our young people.”

The United Democratic Party (UDP) recently widely passed a motion supporting Barrow’s continued leadership of the party through the next National Convention scheduled for August and into the general elections due by 2025.
