By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A UNICEF report noted that about 9,600 children and youths have attempted to cross the dangerous Darien Gap in the first 2 months of 2023 alone.
According to CNN, that is 7x the amount compared to the same period in 2022.
Migrants hoping to reach the U.S. usually take the dangerous 37-mile trek from Colombia to Panama.
In addition, over 100 children attempted the trek alone.
Migrants have reported robberies, corpses, mutilations, and rape in the dense forest along the route.
UNICEF warned that children who survived the trek had “invisible wounds.”
“Many of these kids have gone through a terrible time, they have seen things they should not have seen,” Sandie Blanchet, UNICEF’s representative said.
