By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the U.S. Justice Department charged 28 members of Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel including sons of drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the Associated Press reports.
The U.S. Justice department filed charges against cartel leaders and suppliers, lab managers, fentanyl traffickers, security leaders, financiers and weapons traffickers.
Three of El Chapo’s sons known as Chapitos were also charged Ovidio Guzmán López, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Sálazar.
Chinese and Guatemalan citizens accused of supplying precursor chemicals required to make fentanyl were also charged.
In 2021 alone, almost 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) noted that the most fentanyl trafficked in the United States comes from the Sinaloa cartel.
