Posted: Saturday, April 15, 2023. 5:48 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A devastating fire in the Lake Independence area of Belize City has left 10 or more people homeless after it destroyed three residential structures. The fire began at a wooden home on Hibiscus Street and quickly spread to two other homes on Vernon Street.

Resident Maggie Garbutt, a fire victim, revealed that she used her garden hose in an attempt to fight the flames. Garbutt shared her shock and distress over the incident, stating that everyone was at work when the fire occurred. There were no electrical issues in the house, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Garbutt also mentioned the emotional impact of the fire on her sister, whose house was destroyed by Hurricane Lisa. After working hard to rebuild her home, the fire has once again left her devastated.

The Belize Fire Department is expected to provide more information about the fire on Monday.
