International News: Attorney alleges man was ‘eaten alive’ by bed bugs in Atlanta Jail; Calls for investigation

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The attorney representing the family of a man who died while in custody at an Atlanta jail has alleged that the individual was “eaten alive” by bed bugs and other insects.

Lashawn Thompson had been detained on a misdemeanor charge and was held in the psychiatric wing of the Fulton County Jail after being deemed mentally ill.

Horrific images released by attorney Michael Harper show Thompson’s body covered in bites.

According to the BBC, Harper has demanded a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s death, saying “Mr. Thompson was found dead in a cell infested with insects and bed bugs. The condition of the cell was subhuman, and he did not deserve to be treated this way.”

Thompson was found unresponsive in his cell on September 19, just three months after being arrested, and was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed a severe bed bug infestation in Thompson’s cell, prompting the sheriff’s office to launch a full investigation.
