By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes now have 27 points after the Premier League of Belize (PLB) ruled to give them three points for the game the San Pedro Pirates ‘forfeited’ by not providing accommodations for the Belize City referees last Saturday.

Not content with the decision, the Pirates said in a social media post on Friday that the club was withdrawing from the Premier League of Belize. But so far haven’t followed up with any official notice to the PLB.

However, should they proceed with dropping out of the championship, Port Loyola will total 24, as they will get three points by forfeit for Sunday’s game, and will qualify for the playoffs.

Benque Viejo United (18), who are playing on Saturday against Wagiya, which many consider an easy win (though Wagiya says they are going for the win tonight), would stand to get three free points next week as well. So, should Benque win tonight and San Pedro maintain their stance, then Benque Viejo United would, totaling 24, qualify to the detriment of champions Altitude, who with 16 points can only aspire to 22 points.

Progresso with 23 would already be qualified as well regardless of the scores in their remaining games.

But, should San Pedro have a change of heart, it’d be five teams fighting for three spots since Verdes already secured a playoff berth, even before getting the three forfeit points from the game which was not played against San Pedro last Saturday.
