‘Divorcees in Belize wouldn’t have the same ending as Professional Footballer Achraf Hakimi,’ attorney Orson Elrington warns

By Benjamin Flowers: Last week the story of Professional Footballer Achraf Hakimi, who managed to evade losing half his fortune to his wife who filed for divorce went viral after the court learned that all his assets were in his mother’s name. Attorney Orson Elrington has shared his professional opinion on the matter and cautioned that the Laws of Belize would dictate a different outcome if the situation had played out here.

Elrngton shared his view on his Facebook page, assessing the defense that Hakimi’s home is registered in his mother’s name and he deposits up to 80 percent of the $1 million that he is paid monthly, into his mother’s account.

“But would that work in Belize? The short answer is NO!” Elrington said. “In Belize, the approach taken when there are requests to alter property rights within divorce proceedings is as follows 1. identifying and valuing the property acquired by the parties during the marriage; and 2. considering and evaluating the matters listed in subsections (5)(a) to (i) of Section 148A, this includes contributions of a wife as a homemaker.”

He also said that the court could deem that placing assets in the name of the mother simply as an attempt to circumvent divorce proceedings and therefore still order that they be split.

Achraf Hakimi Mouh is a Moroccan professional footballer who plays for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the Morocco national team. When his estranged wife Hiba Abouk filed for divorce, after less than two years of marriage )(the pair wed in 2020), she demanded half of his fortune in settlement. Maraca.com reports that Abouk, a 24-year-old, established model, has a reported net worth of about $2 million, but would have received $8.5 million if her demands had been met.

The divorce has sparked a debate online on whether or not she should be compensating him, on the grounds that his financial arrangements make her the richer of the two; however, the court has issued no such order.
