Man takes drug trafficking charge so his mother and girlfriend are set free

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man was fined for drug trafficking after owning up to the offense so his loved ones would be spared the charge.

Twenty-one-year-old Jamil David appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged jointly with his girlfriend and mother with one count of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another in relation to 667 grams of marijuana found at their home during a police raid, and one count of possession of controlled drugs in relation to a separate 209 grams of marijuana.

In court, David accepted responsibility for both quantities of drugs, and the prosecution withdrew the charge from the other defendants. His attorney, Orson Elrington, asked the court to consider the fact that David is a first offender when delivering his sentence.

For the drug possession charge, David was fined $100 plus $5 cost of court, which he had to pay by May 31 or he will spend a month in jail. For the possession with intent charge he was fined $2,500 plus $5 cost of court, which he needs to pay by September 29, or he will spend a year in jail.
