Under-20 Belize Women’s National Team get bombed 13-0 by Costa Rica in Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship Qualifiers, play Guatemala on Monday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-20 Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) fell disastrously 13-0 to Costa Rica on Saturday in their initial match of the 2023 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship Qualifiers at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua, Nicaragua.

The Costa Ricans pumped in nine goals in the first half and added five more in the second. It serves of no consolation but on Friday, Canada pounded Martinique 15-0 at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic in Group A.

On Saturday, the Dominican Republic also demolished Dominica 15-0 in Group C at the Estadio Estadio Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Those scores make the five- and six-goal losses, and there have been several at the start of the Qualifiers, respectable though they are not.

In the other Group E match on Saturday, Nicaragua beat Guatemala 3-1. St Lucia haven’t played yet.

The BWNT’s second game is scheduled for Monday, April 17, against Guatemala at 4:00 pm. In their third match, the BWNT will challenge Nicaragua at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19. The BWNT closes the round robin on Friday, April 21, against St Lucia at 4:00 pm.

Twenty-eight countries are competing in six different groups. All groups, made up of either four or five countries, will play round robins.

The six group winners advance to the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship where they join the region’s top two ranked nations, United States and Mexico. The Concacaf Championship is scheduled for May 24 – June 3, 2023, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The top three finishers from the eight-team competition will qualify to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
