By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The University of South Florida’s Optical Oceanography Lab revealed that the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt contained a record 13 million tons of seaweed at the end of March.
According to the Brunswick News, the sargassum seaweed could reach a peak between June and July, 2023.
Experts say that the major beach events would be “inevitable” in the Caribbean, Florida and Mexico throughout the summer.
“Given the complexity of its motion, growth, and decay, it is not possible to forecast the timing of beaching,” a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokesperson said.
