Verdict in manslaughter case of Kareem Martinez due this Friday, family and friends of Laddie Gillett await decision

Posted: Monday, April 17, 2023. 1:16 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In Belmopan on Friday, High Court Justice Antoinette Moore is expected to deliver her verdict on a charge of manslaughter against former Corporal of Police Kareem Martinez.

Martinez is accused of the shooting death of Laddie Gillett, 14, in Placencia on July 14, 2021.

A statement from the Justice For Laddie Foundation over the weekend in the form of a letter to Laddie begins, “As we await Justice to be delivered this Friday, April 21st, at the Belmopan Supreme Court, we look back on the beginnings of the legacy achieved in YOUR name.”

Those achievements include the Memorial Garden created at the scene of the incident into a safe place for mediation, iteration, and hope; refurbishment of a Playground at St. Andrew’s Primary School in San Ignacio; the first-ever Youth For Change Symposium, where critical discussions regarding Laddie’s Law, Belize’s Justice System, and the importance of working with the Police and the community were at the center point, and the upcoming Laddie’s Football Tournament, where kids from rural and urban areas will engage in Laddie’s favorite sport, football. That tournament starts on Saturday, a day after the verdict.

If found guilty, Martinez, represented by Oscar Selgado, theoretically faces up to life in prison, though in practice prison terms are much less.

The case was prosecuted by Javier Chan and Richard “Dickie” Bradley.
