Elden Flowers, charged with murder of Richard O’Neil, walks free after case against him is withdrawn

Posted: Tuesday, April 18, 2023. 9:46 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, Elden Flowers, the man charged with the 2019 murder of Richard O’Neil, was set free of that charge after the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) entered a nolle prosequi, essentially abandoning the case against him.

Flowers was brought down from the Belize Central Prison to appear before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court of Belize, where he learned that he would be a free man. Senior Crown Counsel, Sheneiza Smith entered a case of nolle prosequi against Flowers, but gave no reason for the submission.

On November 27, 2019, O’Neil, who resided on Ordonez Street in Belize City, was kidnapped and was taken to an area on the Burrell Boom/Hattieville Road. He was then shot and dumped on the roadside and left for dead, but lived another three weeks and died in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital while receiving treatment.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, Flowers was read a charge of murder and remanded to prison, where he remained on remand for three years. This is not Flowers’ first murder charge. In 2017, he was charged with the murder of Randolph Johnson, 19, who was shot and killed, but in July last year, he was acquitted of Johnson’s murder by Justice Colin Williams in a trial by judge without jury.
