By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in Mexico have detained the chief of the migration agency in Chihuahua following a deadly fire that claimed the lives 40 people at a government-run migrant detention center in Ciudad Juarez last month.
Surveillance footage of the center showed that officials failed to unlock the doors of cells so where migrants were trapped.
Director Salvador Gonzalez Guerrero’s arrest is the most high-profile arrest in the investigation.
The Guardian reports that last week, Mexico’s attorney general announced the director of the National Migration Institute (INM) is also under investigation.
Media reports found at least 12 fires have broken out in government-run migrant centers since 2019.
In addition, the migration institute has been consistently accused of human rights abuses against migrants.
