Police take note of the rise in missing females running away from home

Posted: Tuesday, April 18, 2023. 10:50 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As we reported last week, there has been steady reporting from the Belize Police Department about female teenagers and pre-teens being reported missing.

Breaking Belize News’ records show 12 females between the ages of 13 and 19 reported missing in the first three months of 2023, as reported to the Police. Special Envoy Rossana Briceno, the spouse of the Prime Minister, told us two weeks ago that she has been monitoring our reporting and agrees that it is a national concern – one her office intends to take up in the near future.

This week, Police reiterated that these investigations are treated no differently from murder or other major crimes, as stated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, the officer commanding Eastern Division.

“We treat each [missing person] as a separate report and we follow up, but most of them are runaways and they come back home,” ACP Romero said, agreeing that these investigations do take resources from the Department that can be used elsewhere: “…because efforts are put into these reports and investigations are conducted.”

Police have previously advised that family members need not wait 24, 48, or even 72 hours to report a missing person – if the circumstances warrant it, report as immediately as possible so that searches can begin.
