Popular restaurant Smok’D answers the call of father who needs help raising funds for his daughter’s surgery

By Benjamin Flowers: The popular Belize City-based restaurant Smok’D has pledged its support to 14-year-old Vicky Samos, who is battling lupus and in dire need of a kidney transplant.

Smok’D co-owner Andrew Craig told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that he saw our original story with an appeal from Diego Samos, Vicky’s father, who is preparing to donate one of his own kidneys and is trying to raise the money for the surgery. Craig said that he was moved by Samos’ appeal and decided to open the restaurant on Sunday, March 23, and donate the profits from that day’s sales towards Vicky’s surgery.

“Kids aren’t supposed to go through these things but it happens, I have a daughter the same age that attends the same school,” Craig told BBN.

Smok’D started off specialising in smoked meats, but has enhanced its reputation due to the rising popularity of its bacon and cheese burgers. The menu for the upcoming Sunday sale will include bacon and cheese burgers, chipotle chicken sandwiches, pork burgers, and wings.

“Maybe we smoke some ribs,” Craig added.

Vicky Samos was diagnosed with lupus earlier this year and is also going through Stage 5 chronic kidney disease (end-stage renal failure), as well as enduring arterial hypertension and anemia. Doctors told her father that the surgery could cost in excess of $100,000.
