By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Bomba United Farmers Cooperative presented the results of an experiment on 25 varieties of onions during the Onion Field Day held on Wednesday, April 19, in Bomba in the Belize District.

“The cooperative joined with onion seed providers and is doing their own research into onion varieties that are resistant to pests, withstand sudden climatic changes and grow well in the soils and weather conditions of Belize,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday.

“The field day saw the participation of local onion producers, students, BMDC, Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise personnel and Minister Jose Abelardo Mai, who praised the onion producers for their initiative in doing research and highlighted the effects of climate change and effects on the environment caused by man.”

MAFSE said that the well-attended ceremony and presentation of findings, the attendees toured the trial plots and onion fields planted by the Bomba United Farmers’ Cooperative.

The Bomba United Farmers Cooperative chairman Reynaldo Orellana said he was satisfied with the experiment. Orellana said he considered 22 out of the 25 varieties can be recommended for Belize. He added that the Cooperative’s farmers have been cultivating ten varieties over the last 18 years and since last December, they planted 15 other varieties brought in by seed suppliers for them to conduct the onion experiment.

“In white, the best one is named Blanca Grande (big White), in purple we have the Red Star, and for the yellow varieties we have Raider,” Orellana said.

According to Orellana, they have been working closely with four seed suppliers, namely Agro Vet Jiron and Sons, Semillas Raul, Agri Prec, and Seed Agents Agro Suppliers.

MAFSE and the Cooperatives Department have been following the experiment closely.
