Belize play competitive match, lose 3-2 to Nicaragua in 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship Qualifiers in Managua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-20 Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) played a rather competitive match but ended up losing to hosts Nicaragua 3-2 in their third match of the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship Qualifiers at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua.

Nicaragua opened the scoring when Perla Garache found the net in the 9’. Then Inés Navarrete extended the lead to 2-0 in the 24′.

However, the BWNT were not to be outdone and Khalydia Velasquez powered a long shot from outside the 18-yard-box in the 25′ to cut the lead to 2-1.

Navarrette then struck again for Nicaragua in the 31’ for a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Belize fought back with Velasquez creating several opportunities which produced a second goal in the 67’. Velasquez again powered her way through the Nicaraguan defense pushing into the box out of sheer determination and struck a right-foot bomb that beat the Nicaraguan keeper. Unfortunately for the U-20 BWNT, no more goals were forthcoming.

Nicaragua won 3-2.

In the other Group F match, Guatemala ran over St Lucia 5-0.

Belize have lost three matches in the championship. Last Saturday, our team succumbed 13-0 to Costa Rica. On Monday, the BWNT fell 3-0 to Guatemala on Monday, prior to Wednesday’s game against Nicaragua.

Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala lead Group F with six points though Guatemala have one more game. St Lucia and Belize don’t have a point yet.

The BWNT closes the round robin on Friday, April 21, against St Lucia at 4:00 pm. That’s the best opportunity for both teams to get a win.
