Not ‘Ruins’ but ‘Archaeological Sites’- Maya Culture-Belize tells Government, media and public

Posted: Thursday, April 20, 2023. 2:04 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Maya Culture-Belize issued a statement thanking those who continue to help amplify the voices of the Maya community.

Maya Culture-Belize also wants to educate Belizeans and visitors about the importance of language.

“The word “ruin” is a derogatory term as it implies a sense of decay or failure. Other historical monuments around the world are not referred to as ruins.

Therefore, moving forward, we kindly ask that the media, government, tourism sector, including tour guides, correct their wording and refer to Maya ancestral sites as either Archeological Sites or Temples,” the organization said.

In addition, the organization urges everyone to remember that the Maya civilization has gifted the world with math, written language, engineering, and an understanding of the cosmos that is beyond our current understanding.

“However, the most significant gift the ancient Maya has given to humanity is a unique spirituality that calls for oneness with creation and mankind. This spirituality is still very much alive and thriving among modern-day Maya,” it added.

“We are not dead, vanished, or in ruins. We are alive and thriving,” Maya Culture-Belize further stated.

Maya culture-Belize encourages all Belizeans to preserve and protect our sacred sites and honor the living Maya culture and communities.
