By Rubén Morales Iglesias: With the final games in the regular season of the Premier League of Belize set for the weekend, the PLB is working together with the National Sports Council so that all three games that have playoff implications are played at the same time on Saturday. But so far, there’s been no announcement to that end.

That would mean bringing up the Progresso vs Port Loyola at the People’s Stadium in Orange from Sunday at 4:00 pm to Saturday at 7:30 pm. The intention is that no team has an advantage over another in their bid to make the playoffs. But there is one problem. The lights at the People’s Stadium.

“PLB and the National Sports Council are working together to have all the lights working at the legendary People’s Stadium for the game to take place,” Progresso said in a social media post on Wednesday.

“This is the last regular season game of the tournament and the hottest one yet, with only Verdes so far having secured a spot in the playoffs. Five other teams will fight this weekend for the remaining three playoffs spots.”

A draw would be good enough for Progresso but Port need a win.

Meanwhile, Benque Viejo United are looking for a playoff spot against the San Pedro Pirates at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. The Pirates can qualify with a draw but Benque need a win.

Altitude, the team with the least possibilities, need to beat Verdes, who already qualified to the playoffs, and other scores to go in their favour, for them to jump over the hump. The match is set for the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence.

The one match that has been changed to Saturday is Wagiya vs Internacional-Bandits, which originally was slated for Sunday. Neither of these two teams have playoff possibilities, but both are trying to avoid finishing last. So, why has Wagiya switched the game from Dangriga’s Carl Ramos Stadium to the FFB Field in Belmopan?

According to Wagiya owner/manager Nelson Moss, they have been invited by the Football Federation of Belize on occasion of an activity the football governing body is having on the weekend at its headquarters, to play the game there. That will facilitate their expenses so, they’ve agreed to the benefit of the International-Bandits.

The match is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the FFB Field.
