Belizean taxi driver Tulio Armando Rodriguez Oliva detained in Chetumal after a crash in which Mexican taxi driver dies

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Reports out of Chetumal, Mexico, say a Belizean taxi driver Tulio Armando Rodriguez Oliva of Paraiso, Corozal, was in an accident with a Mexican taxi (#540) at the intersection of Independencia and Carmen Ochoa streets near INEGI after midday on Friday.

The Mexican taxi driver allegedly died in the crash. An elderly lady travelling in the Mexican taxi was injured according to Mexican media outlet Periodismo Urbano.

According to the Mexican outlet, one of the two vehicles jumped a stop sign, but at the same time, it said Rodriguez had right of way (preferencia). A Mexican official said it appeared the Mexican taxi driver was in the wrong. The Mexican taxi driver made a U-turn at the corner.

The Belizean driver reportedly from Paraiso, Corozal (Corozal taxi D-00948), told Periodismo Urbano that his car brake failed, and his car wouldn’t stop. He said he went to Chetumal to take someone shopping. His passenger was shopping when the crash occurred.

According to Periodismo Urbano, the Mexican taxi driver wasn’t wearing his seat belt.

Since then, Rodriguez has been detained by Mexican authorities.
