CEO Dr. Osmond Martinez commemorates Earth Day calling for collective action to protect our natural resources

Posted: Friday, April 21, 2023. 2:55 pm CST.

Earth Day message from CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Osmond Martinez:

Earth being the wonderful creation of God, is incredible enough and can never be drawn completely in a single stretch. Together with its humans, plants, animals, and micro- organisms, the Earth also owns different ecosystems, like, ravishing rainforests, deserts, splendid coral reefs, scenic grasslands and many more.

We have inherited a perfect planet, but with this inheritance comes great responsibility. We are stewards, entrusted with preserving and protecting its delicate balance. Yet, we fail to live up to this responsibility.

Our negligent actions caused widespread environmental degradation, from climate change and pollution, to habitat destruction and biodiversity loss.

We must take immediate and urgent action to protect and restore our planet. This requires us to rethink our relationship with nature, to acknowledge the interconnectedness of all life and the role that we play in the health of our planet. It requires us to embrace sustainable practices, to reduce our carbon footprint, protect our forests and oceans, and invest in clean technologies and renewable energy. We must also acknowledge the social and economic dimensions of this crisis.

Our work can take many forms and it starts with protecting the environments around us. As proud Belizeans, let us work together to protect our beautiful, abundant, natural resources that can offer opportunities for sustainable development, and contribute to the country’s economic growth. Let us protect our home!

With collective actions – the Government, Private Sector, Civil Society, Academia and Citizens, we can make a difference!

Notably, through research and education, we can help to address critical environmental challenges for real-world impact. Academia can serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring and empowering the next generation of leaders to take up the mantle of stewardship, and drive meaningful action on environmental issues.

As we navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world and as we try to manage and protect our natural resources, let us embrace this responsibility and work together to build a sustainable and just future FOR ALL
