By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso FC said late Thursday night that by midday on Friday the Premier League of Belize (PLB) should announce their decision on changing their game against Port Layola to Saturday.

The PLB and the National Sports Council, according to Progresso, have been working on the lighting system at the People’s Stadium so that their game can be played on Saturday night instead of Sunday.

This is so that the three final games of the PLB’s regular season that have playoff implications are played at the same time on Saturday so that no team has an edge over the others.

“Decision for the Progresso FC VS Port Layola game should be made official by midday tomorrow [Friday],” Progresso said at 9:00 pm on Thursday in a social media post.

“At this time, the lights at the People’s Stadium are still not fixed. However, NSC is making all efforts to have them ready by Friday midday.”

While the Altitude-Verdes and Benque-San Pedro Pirates were slated for Saturday at 7:30 pm, the Progresso-Port Layola game was scheduled for Sunday at 4:00 pm. Because of the poor lighting at the People’s Stadium, all Progresso games had to be played during the day during the season.

“This is the last regular season game of the tournament and the hottest one yet, with only Verdes so far having secured a spot in the playoffs. Five other teams will fight this weekend for the remaining three playoffs spots,” Progresso said in a social media post on Wednesday.

Progresso (23 points) only need a draw to secure a playoff berth Port (22) must win, though a draw may be enough should Benque Viejo United lose.

Benque are facing the San Pedro Pirates at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Like Progresso, the Pirates (23) can qualify with a draw, but Benque (21) need a win.

Champions Altitude (19), the club with the least possibilities, are playing Verdes (30), who have already qualified to the playoffs, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence. For the Champions to qualify they must beat Verdes and Port and Benque Viejo United must lose.

The Wagiya (3) vs Internacional-Bandits (2), which has no bearing on the playoff, was also changed to Saturday and moved from Dangriga to Belmopan. Both clubs are trying to avoid finishing last. Wagiya switched the match, according to owner/manager Nelson Moss, when they were by the Football Federation of Belize, on occasion of an activity the football governing body is having on the weekend at its headquarters, to play the game there. The match is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the FFB Field.
