Statistical Institute of Belize verifying census data for September release

By Benjamin Flowers: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is currently working on verifying several aspects of data in preparation for the release of the preliminary report on the 2022 Population and Housing Census.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) spoke with Deputy Director General of the SIB Miriam Willoughby, who explained that data collection ended in January, and the preliminary report is expected in September.

“We are verifying the building and dwelling unit and household counts. We are also doing additional consistency checks with the information collected from the household and individual questionnaires,” Willoughby said.

The Census began in May 2022, but suffered several delays, firstly due to personnel shortages and then Hurricane Lisa, which hit Belize on November 2, 2022. Data collection, which was initially forecast to conclude in the last quarter of 2022, ended up being pushed back several months which has not only delayed the census report but the delivery of thematic reports which will focus on key subtopics within the census.

Willoughby said that the first thematic report is now expected to be released in December 2023 with another scheduled for March 2024.

The Census, an activity held every 10 years, was initially scheduled for May 2020 but was delayed twice due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
