Attorney Dickie Bradley criticizes lack of change in police department after Laddie Gillett’s death

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former police Corporal Kareem Martinez has been found guilty of Laddie Gillet’s murder, but Attorney Dickie Bradley says not much has changed in the police department’s interaction with minors. Despite the nationwide backlash after Laddie Gillett’s death, Bradley believes there has been an inadequate change in the system, and he pointed to the recent case of Dyandre Chi as an example.

Speaking out yesterday to the media, Bradley argued that there is no review, no reform, and no assistance given to the commissioner of police by way of personnel or training. He believes that the tragedy of Laddie Gillett’s death could have been avoided with proper management of police officers and training.

Bradley’s comments come as three police officers were sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing a man in custody. Meanwhile, Corporal 1463 Esmin Flores and PC 1862 Salomen Cowo, who were recently charged with murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Dyandre Chi, are expected to apply for Supreme Court bail.

The lack of change in the police department has alarmed Bradley, who argues that nothing has been learned from Laddie Gillett’s death. He believes that a young police officer in his late 20s will more than likely go to prison for an error that could have been avoided with proper training and management.

Despite the nationwide outcry over police brutality and excessive use of force, it seems that some officers have yet to learn the lesson. With cases like Dyandre Chi and the shooting of Laddie Gillett still making headlines, it remains to be seen whether the police department will finally take the necessary steps to address these issues.
