By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-20 Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) closed their participation in the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship Qualifiers with a 6-1 trouncing of St Lucia at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua, Nicaragua.

Shaylalee Flowers unleashed a power shot to put Belize ahead in the 6’, but St. Lucia tied the game in the 17’ off a Freegeanne Joseph goal.

The match remained level until the 36’ when Belize captain Roshanny Narváez powered a long-range floater into the goal, surprising St. Lucia.

Belize then lost Flowers in the 49’ after a rough tackle which earned her a second yellow card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Belize moved on and made it 3-1 in the 56’ when Khalydia Velasquez got the ball within the 18, controlled and tapped it in with her right foot. Then, in the 76’, Elva Nunes hammered a left foot shot to the left corner to put Belize ahead 4-1. In the 76’ Kenya Perez hit the fifth off a rebound from St Lucia’s goalkeeper. Velasquez closed off the scoring in the 86’ off an assist by Perez.

Velasquez finished the tournament with four goals as she had scored Belize’s two against Nicaragua on Wednesday.
