Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow criticizes Ministry of Immigration for human smuggling

Posted: Saturday, April 22, 2023. 8:22 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow has spoken out against the Ministry of Immigration, accusing it of complicit facilitation in human smuggling. Barrow’s comments were made during a heated debate in the House of Representatives, where he clashed with Prime Minister John Briceno over the issue.

Barrow raised concerns about rampant corruption in the Ministry of Immigration and accused the government of failing to take action to address the issue. He also pointed out that 2,000 Haitian nationals have disappeared in the country, suggesting that the ministry may be involved in human smuggling.

The debate grew heated when Barrow made direct attacks on former Minister of State for Immigration Monchie Cervantez. However, Cervantez did not respond to the accusations.

Prime Minister Briceno defended the government’s record on immigration, noting that his administration had lifted visa restrictions for Haitian nationals. He also accused Barrow of making unfounded accusations and criticized his record of addressing corruption in the past.

The exchange in the House of Representatives highlights the ongoing concerns about human smuggling and corruption in the Ministry of Immigration. As the government continues to grapple with these issues, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken to address them and prevent further abuses.
