By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men, cousins, accused of being involved in the same murder, have both been granted bail by the High Court of Belize.

Gabriel Salazar appeared in the High Court before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandfrot on Thursday, April 20, and Carlos Salazar appeared before Justice Sancroft on Friday, April 21, both men charged with the shooting death of 25-year-old Jerry Espat on October 3, 2021.

Gabriel was offered bail in the sum of $50,000, plus either one surety of the same or four sureties of $12,500 each, and Carlos was granted bail in the sum of $55,000 plus either one surety of the same or four sureties of $13,750 each.

To date, neither man has managed to post bail and remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison.

Espat and three others were out fishing when two boats approached them and someone started shooting. Espat was hit during the incident and fell off the boat, while the others rushed back to land to escape their attackers and receive medical treatment for varying injuries.

Espat’s body was recovered from the water the next day.
