By Aaron Humes: This afternoon in the High Court in Belize City, Jasmine Hartin pleaded guilty to manslaughter by negligence for causing the death by gunfire of Police Senior Superintendent Henry Jemmott in San Pedro Town.
Sentencing has been set for May 31.
Hartin exclusively told our court reporter as she was leaving that, “I just want Henry’s family to have peace now and for this whole thing to be behind us all so that we can heal.”
Hartin engaged Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington and outside counsel and decided to plead despite insisting that the incident was accidental – and the gun went off by mistake.
The charge typically carries little to no prison time and a fine, though it is a charge more commonly seen with traffic accidents.
