Eruption Nightclub erupts over Commissioner of Police’s claims; threatens lawsuit for defamation

Posted: Tuesday, April 25, 2023. 1:27 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The owner of Ladyville’s Eruption Night Club at Mile 11 1/2 Philip Goldson Highway has charged defamation against Commissioner of Police Chester Williams with respect to recent media interviews.

In discussing the reason why police officers have been barred from working at the night club on special or regular duty, the Commissioner claimed inter alia that either the owner or a relative of his was convicted in relation to trafficking in persons.

The night club owner’s response is that this is “wilfully misleading, without merit and outrageously scandalous… reckless and highly defamatory with no evidence, and has caused me to suffer reputational harm as the owner, individuals associated to me including my family, and constitutes tortious interference and harm to my establishment.” He specifically denies being convicted of any such crime since 2010, when he says he first entered the business.

According to the owner, “In addition, further statements made during that interview such as, “If any police officer is caught working there whether on or off-duty that police officer will be dealt with severely”, has affected me by exposing my business to vulnerability and publicly stating that Eruption Nightclub does not have any protection from the Police Department.”

Notably, the Belize Defence Force has also barred soldiers from visiting the nightclub.

The nightclub owner contends that he can prove the statements are false and defamatory and invites the Commissioner to either provide proof or expect a lawsuit.
