International News: Dengue outbreak kills 40 in Argentina

Posted: Tuesday, April 25, 2023. 1:34 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Health officials in Argentina are battling a record outbreak of dengue fever that has killed 40 people.

According to the BBC, over 60,000 people have been infected with dengue.

Dengue fever is spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes but biologists are irradiating thousands of male mosquitoes in labs, to be released later, in the hope that their offspring will be unviable because of DNA damage.

Biologists noted that the aim is to make the mosquitoes that have been exposed to radiation the dominant type, to curb the spread of dengue.

The health ministry has also ramped up measures including mosquito netting, insect repellant and removal of water containers that may act as breeding grounds.
