Belize Territorial Volunteers announce trip to Gracias Adios to commemorate signing of treaty establishing Belize’s borders

Posted: Wednesday, April 26, 2023. 7:18 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) has announced that the group will be taking a trip to Gracias Adios, Toledo District, this weekend to commemorate the signing of the 1859 treaty between Great Britain and Guatemala that established the borders of current-day Belize.

The BTV issued a release on Tuesday saying that they will be headed to Grcias Adios on Saturday, April 29, leaving at 7:00 a.m.

“Upon arriving at the border marker, the volunteers will tidy up and maintain the trees they planted last year and will also spruce up the border monument,” the BTV said.

The activist group noted that it has been making trips to the border marker at Gracias Adios for the past 15 years. In years past, many of their trips have been met with aggression by members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces.

Such incidents have, on occasion, required input from the Government of Belize and the Organization of American States.
