National Commission for Families and Children calls on police to thoroughly investigate case of children being sold drug-laced snacks

Posted: Wednesday, April 26, 2023. 3:51 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The National Commission for Families and Children (NCFC) is the latest entity to condemn the recent incident where 30 school children were hospitalized due to consuming snacks containing marijuana.

The NCFC called on parents and guardians to be vigilant in protecting children and pledged to do its part in the national framework of child protection.

“We call on the relevant authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and to bring those responsible to justice. We also remind the public about the dangers of drug use and the importance of drug prevention education,” the NCFC said.

The students, all from Belize City, were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) for treatment on Tuesday, after becoming severely ill due to consuming the snacks. An update from the KHMH issued earlier today, said that the majority of the children have since been treated and released.
