By Aaron Humes: Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital CEO Chandra Nisbet Cansino has provided an encouraging update following Tuesday’s mass sickening of Belize City schoolchildren due to marijuana-laced candy.
A short while ago she stated, “A total of 31 children and 7 adults were treated for eating the candies. All children were sent home yesterday except for 2 children that were kept under observation overnight but expected to be discharged today.”
Tests of the suspect sweets confirmed the presence of marijuana. The Commissioner of Police has confirmed that the candy was apparently discarded from the exhibit room where it had been held following a major bust and ended up at the Belize City dump, where scavengers picked it up and it ultimately wound up distributed at one school, Saint Luke Methodist, and possibly others.
Several persons are detained and we are awaiting word from the Commissioner on a full update. In the meantime, adults or children with symptoms of vomiting, profuse sweating, abdominal pain and dehydration are asked to visit the nearest facility and residents are encouraged to report any suspect candy to Police for confiscation.
