Taly Corporation Introduces Beach Cleanup System to San Pedro

Posted: Wednesday, April 26, 2023. 11:42 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News: Belize, known for its turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and outdoor activities, is now known for a new beach feature – sargassum. Sargassum blooms throughout the Caribbean are measuring larger than any previous year, and Belize is not immune to the influx. San Pedro Town Council, hotels and resorts on Ambergris Caye, and local businesses have made extraordinary efforts to keep the beaches sargassum-free; however, the volume of sargassum that arrives to our shores prevents any organization from completing this impossible task.

It is with these impediments in mind that Taly Corporation is pleased to announce the acquisition of heavy equipment dedicated to cleaning up the shores of Ambergris Caye, the first such equipment on the island. The sargassum removal machine, known as a Surf Rake, is towed behind a tractor to remove debris from the shore while leaving the sand behind. Preserving the beaches is a major concern of sargassum removal, and this machine allows both tasks – sargassum removal and beach preservation – to be achieved simultaneously.

In conversations with hotels on the island, Taly Corporation learned that tourists have been displeased to read news and online reviews regarding the ingress of sargassum to the island, resulting in cancelled and postponed trips to Belize.

One hotel manager said, “Guests notice the sargassum. It ruins their vacation photos, it smells, they can’t swim on the beaches. Then they go home and post about it online.”

Another observed, “Unfortunately Belize is becoming known for this problem. There are islands in the Caribbean that boast about their sargassum-free beaches. We are having a major image issue in the news right now.”

Cancelled vacations cripple not only the area’s hotels and resorts, but also harm the restaurants, tour operations, taxi operators, and retail and service businesses that depend on tourism to survive. Taly Corporation has reached out to the San Pedro Town Council with the aim of working together to create higher standards of beaches and coastlines in San Pedro.

While the primary intention of the machine is to remove copious amounts of sargassum from the beaches, this machine also removes unwanted litter such as garbage, glass, and plastics. Removing trash, plastics, and sargassum from the beaches prevent them from ending up back in the ocean and waterways, preserving the marine ecology that is essential to the way of life in Belize. Clean and clear beaches for the people of San Pedro and visitors to the island is the main goal.

Taly Corporation is awaiting approval from the San Pedro Transport Board for the tractor permit, which Taly expects to be granted at this Thursday’s meeting. Following the receipt of the permit, the sargassum removal system and tractor will be shipped to the island and will immediately be put to work. More information on how local businesses may rent the equipment will be available after approval of the tractor permit.
