By Breaking Belize News Staff: This week, brothers Tyrone and Ellis Meighan were remanded to the Belize Central Prison along with three others after committing an attack on one of their neighbors which the prosecution referred to as an “act of domestic terrorism”.
The Meighan brothers along with Jayir Flores, Kenrick Gordon, and Jamal Brackett, were arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Initially, there were different charges for two of the accused, but a submission from the prosecutor Alifa Elrington saw the charges upgraded and all five men were charged with aggravated assault, to which they all pleaded not guilty.
The group was represented by attorney, Ronnell Gonzalez who told the court that the alleged victim was outside, waiting to drop the charges. Elrington refused to call the complainant, explaining that counsel for the accused cannot dictate to the prosecution which witnesses to call and when they should be called. She also noted that Gonzales must have had prior contact with a witness of the prosecution to know that the complainant was about to drop the charges.
The group was also denied bail after the Magistrate agreed with Elrinton’s submission that the crime committed was severe and that releasing them on bail would further put the complainant at risk. Two of the accused sought to change their plea to guilty after the fact, but the change was not allowed at that stage in the proceedings. They were remanded until June 22.
The victim reported to police that while he was walking through his neighborhood, one of the accused pulled him into the Meighan brothers’ yard and they surrounded him with knives and machetes. He said they accused him of stealing a gold chain and threatened to kill him.
The complainant said that he convinced them to let him go by saying he would go find who had the gold chain, and used that opportunity to get help from the police.
