By Breaking Belize News Staff: This week, 38-year-old, Wilford Selvin Dawson, who was shot by police in an incident in Gardenia Village over the weekend, was arraigned in court for aggravated assault against a police officer.
Dawson appeared before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same, which he was able to meet.
He is due back in court on June 7.
On Sunday, April 23, police responded to a call of a man being drunk and disorderly in front of a shop in Gardenia Village. The officers met Dawson when they arrived and attempted to detain him when he pulled a 2×4 piece of lumber and advanced to attack the officers.
The Belize Police Department says that a warning shot was fired, but Dawson maintained his advance, and the arresting officer then shot him in the right ankle. The department also says that there is an ongoing internal investigation to determine if shooting him in the ankle was a justifiable force.
