By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai congratulated the Farmers of the Year at the opening ceremony of the 51st National Agriculture and Trade Show.

“I am proud and honoured to address you this evening as we launch the 51st National Agriculture and Trade Show and welcome Belizeans from all walks of life to celebrate the achievements of our hard-working, enterprising farmers and agribusiness from across this beautiful nation of ours,” Minister Mai said as he addressed the country and those present at the opening at the National Showgrounds in Belmopan.

“I would like to personally congratulate the Senior Farmer of the Year, 38-year-old Adrian Bartley from the Belize District, the Woman Farmer of the Year, Ms. Esmeralda Stanley from the Toledo District, and the Junior Farmer of the Year, 23-year-old Axel Perez from the Corozal District,” Mai said.

The three were present at the opening and were recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Senior Farmer of the Year Adrian Bartley from the Belize District.

Woman Farmer of the Year Esmeralda Stanley from the Toledo District.

Junior Farmer of the Year Axel Perez from the Corozal District.

“These farmers are truly deserving of this year’s awards – they have worked diligently and are contributing to food security, employment, foreign exchange earnings and the overall development of Belize.

He said the three are role models and the MAFSE is particularly proud of women’s achievements.

“They are role models for our young people, women and Belizeans in general,” the Minister said.

“And speaking of women, we are especially proud of all women farmers, we will continue working with them, we will encourage and support them, as they have a significant role to play in agriculture, and it is our intent to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal #5 which is to “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.

“The achievements, successes and contributions of these Farmers of the Year, when combined with that of the numerous farmers that span the length and breadth of Belize, provide clear evidence that agriculture is the pillar of the Belizean economy and plays a crucial role in feeding and growing Belize.”
