By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over recent weeks, 2 journalists were killed in Haiti as gang violence remains rampant in the capital of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas, the Associated Press reports.
On Thursday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that radio reporter Dumesky Kersaint was shot and killed and journalist Ricot Jean was found dead on Tuesday.
CPJ’s director, Carlos Martínez de la Serna said that the security crisis plaguing Haiti is putting journalists at a constant risk of extreme violence.
The National Association of Haitian Media has also condemned the killings, adding that the “climate of tolerated and fueled violence” led to their deaths.
Data from UNESCO noted that in 2022, 9 journalists were murdered in Haiti, the deadliest year for Haitian journalism in recent history, according to UNESCO.
