Matriarch of Palacio family and co-founder of Battle of the Drums, Olivia Palacio celebrates 97th birthday

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Battle of the Drums competition team joined in wishing a happy 97th birthday to Olivia Palacio.

Palacio is the matriarch of the Palacio family and co-founder of the Battle of the Drums.

“It was her vision and wisdom that gave birth to the Battle of the Drums Garifuna cultural retrieval and preservation initiative in 2005. She saw where our culture was slowly, but consistently eroding; and encouraged that we all needed to be the change we wanted to see,” the team noted.

The Battle of the Drums noted that it continues to contribute to that change, through Garifuna Language retrieval program, Garifuna Drumming, Singing and Dance program and the Garifuna community support program.

“We wish her continued blessings, good health and strength. She is our Rock,” it added.
