Good friends and old rivals prepare to face each other in battle at Pro FC 7 tonight

By Benjamin Flowers: Only hours remain before the major mixed martial arts (MMA) event Pro FC7, but fighters participating in the event still managed to catch up with Breaking Belize News and share their stories on what the event means to them.

Marvin Mundo, representing Backa Bush MMA located in Cayo, told our newsroom that at 29 years old, he’s been involved in combat sports for the past 12 years, half of which doing karate. He told BBN that Pro Fc 7 marks his amateur MMA debut which represents the fulfillment of a dream, but a step in a larger mission.

“In Los Tambos, that’s in Spanish Lookout, where I grew up, the only sport we used to play there was soccer,” Mundo said. “I’m not doing it only for myself. I want to show the people in my community that if you have a dream you can go after it. So every time I train and I get tired, that comes into my heart, and I can keep grinding.”

The stakes at tonight’s event are also high for Jan Gabb, representing Team Ascension and Don’t Blink Jujitsu Academy, who is Mundo’s opponent. Gabb, 24, developed an interest in martial arts through movies as a child and took up karate at the age of 11. Gabb’s fight tonight is important on a personal level, as he and his opponent, Marvin Mundo, have a history together, having faced each other before as rivals in karate.

“It’s poetic,” Gabb said. “We went from the karate mats to the octagon, but it’s all love between us, it’s a brotherhood. But back then I didn’t have the confidence that I have now. I don’t take him lightly, I take him very seriously, but I have a big surprise for him tonight.”

Pro FC 7 is being held at the Mexico Sports Center in Belize City beginning at 7:00 p.m. The event has a total of 8 MMA fights and four grappling matches.

In the main event, 16-year-old Jaylen Perez will face off against 25-year-old Guatemalan Jonathan Chutan.
