By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) semifinals are on hold after a PLB club launched an appeal against the PLB decision to award Verdes three points from a game against San Pedro Pirates, which wasn’t played. Verdes and San Pedro Pirates were to have played at San Pedro on Saturday, April 8, but the game was called off because the referees refused to stay at San Pedro, not having any lodging secured for them by the Pirates as per the PLB tournament regulations. A decision by the Premier League of Belize gave the points to Verdes.
However, Breaking Belize News understands the Appeals Committee of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has reversed the PLB ruling.
The PLB has not made any announcement on the matter and has had the clubs on waiting-mode all week.
The alleged FFB Appeals Committee ruling would imply that the game between the San Pedro Pirates and Verdes should be played to decide the winners and final standings.
As it stands, Verdes finished first at the end of the regular season with 30 points and San Pedro second with 26. With the points removed, Verdes would have 27 and San Pedro 26 points and a game pending
If they have to play the game, San Pedro would finish first if they win. A draw or a Verdes win leaves the standings the same.
If Verdes finish first, they play Progresso in the semifinals and San Pedro take on Port Layola.
If San Pedro top the regular season, they play Progresso while Verdes match up against Port Layola.
For now, the Premier League of Belize semifinals are on hold.
