Belizean-American from Houston receives Naval Reserve Scholarship to Prairie View A&M University

By Aaron Humes: A 17-year-old student from Houston, Texas, with Belizean heritage, is headed to college while serving in the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), a college program that requires service in the United States Navy after graduation.

Jem Athena Flowers, daughter of Belizean Carlotta Reneau Flowers, is headed to Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, a part of the Texas A&M University System and a recognized historically black college/university (HBCU), the second oldest educational institution in the state.

We spoke to Flowers this morning by phone and she told us that she had planned to commission as an officer in the Navy after college, but jumped at the opportunity to attend college on a Navy scholarship. “I get to go to college and do what I want for free so I am grateful,” she explained.

The scholarship is a full one covering tuition, books, and fees for four years, after which she becomes an ensign in the Navy. Flowers said she had not decided on a major yet but would most likely study business.

Jem paid tribute to her family in Belize and Texas, saying they were always there for her and she would do her best in gratitude.
