National Met Service suggests hottest day of 2023 so far may have been a record-breaker

Posted: Sunday, April 30, 2023. 10:10 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: It is almost traditional at this time of the year for the weather to be hot, especially in inland areas; but according to the National Meteorological Service, preliminary information suggests that records may have been broken.

On its social media page, the forecasters displayed a map of the maximum surface temperatures for April 29 at the automatic weather stations posted countrywide. It noted, “Preliminary information suggests that the daily maximum temperature extreme temperature record have been broken for some areas such as Belmopan, Central Farm, and Tower Hill.” Central Farm’s maximum temperature peaked at 102.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 39.2 degrees Celsius.

It added, “These extreme temperatures and the sudden shift in moisture due to a cold front nearby supported strong updrafts (rising air). This led to severe thunderstorms in some areas and carried the raindrops so high up in the air, that it froze and caused the hailstorm [on Saturday].”

Maximum inland high temperatures will be a more comfortable 91 degrees Fahrenheit today and 87 degrees along the coast. However, while there is still some rain in the forecast, those attending the National Agriculture and Trade Show or doing other activities outdoors are encouraged to stay hydrated.
