“Belize does not belong to Guatemala!”: Territorial Volunteers complete memorial trip despite armed forces’ aggression

Posted: Monday, May 1, 2023. 10:35 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Annually on or near the anniversary of the signing of the 1859 Anglo-Guatemalan Treaty which establishes the current land and sea borders in the south and west of Belize with Guatemala, the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) led by Wil Maheia travel to the Gracias a Dios monument marker along the Sarstoon River.

This year’s trip was held on Saturday and was marked by Guatemalan Armed Forces personnel demanding the Belizean boats “show them their documents” and insisting that they were in Guatemalan territory.

According to attorney Audrey Matura-Shepherd, who attended along with the Belize PEACE Movement’s Bobby Lopez and Nigel Petillo, the group “prevailed” against the GAF mostly by outrunning them, as it appears the military was ready for leader Wil Maheia’s annual foray.

Notably, as Belize’s forward operating base on the Sarstoon at Barranco is not operating at the moment, there were no Belizean forces nearby, according to Maheia, to intervene.
